At first, we were skeptical about these so-called free online resources for finding money, we always thought to ourselves who would give away money that easy let alone have everyone search their site to see for themselves?

 

But it’s true, we’re proof that these sites work.

 

 

BACKGROUNDER

 

About five years ago, my wife received an unsolicited letter from an agency saying she had $5,000 waiting for her at the California Controller’s office, all she had to do was fill out the included form and for a finder’s fee, the company will process the claim and send her check within 30 days.

 

Being the skeptics that we are, we investigated the matter intently and sure enough, just by doing a few clicks, we were able to verify, search, file and eventually receive the cash from the State ourselves.

  1. missingmoney.com – This is a general search database of all the State Controller offices around the nation. The site is run by The National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators or NAUPA.  The site is free and sharing to as many people as you can is encouraged.

 

  1. If you suspect that a loved one or friend who passed have life insurance and maybe left you something, the site to check out is the Life Insurance Policy Locator Service.  The site’s database is managed by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners which is the nationwide organization whose main responsibility is to protect the interests of insurance consumers.

 

  • The site was created to help Individuals, executors or legal representatives of a deceased person who believe they are beneficiaries, to locate benefits from life insurance policies and annuity contracts.  For more information, you can visit their FAQ page for details and frequently asked questions.

 

  1. If you’ve left a company and you suspect that you could be entitled to Pension or Retirement benefits, the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation, a US Government agency, has a searchable database that allows everyone to search for unclaimed pension money from companies that went out of business or ended a defined plan.

 

  • One of the firms I worked for in the past had a pension plan and sure enough, I was able to locate my benefit. It’s surely worth the time to check.

If you moved and failed to receive your refund check or you think that the IRS owes you money, the site to visit is ‘Where’s my Refund‘, it’s a simple process and only takes three fields to fill out, one caveat though is that you must have an exact refund amount that you need to enter to have a successful hit.

 

  1. If you live in a State that withholds taxes, the IRS also provides a link for you to see if you might have State refund amounts owed to you, here’s the IRS State Finder link to visit. Sometimes people forget or move out of State and miss being paid their refund; so it’s always worth the time to check.

 

  1. The Wage and Hour Division (WHD) arm of the US Department of Labor has a site called ‘Workers Owed Wages’ where anyone can search the database to see if they may have money owed them thru back wages the Government recovered from erring employers.

 

“The Wage and Hour Division (WHD) enforces some of our nation’s most comprehensive labor laws. When we find violations, we often recover unpaid wages on behalf of employees. The agency makes every effort to locate and notify all employees due back wages.”  the site goes on to say.

To start searching the database, begin by entering the “employer’s name” then click “WOW Search”.
