Making a big life change is pretty scary.  But know what’s even scarier? Regret”  Anonymous

As my wife and I embarked on our debt free journey, we began to take stock of our situation and where we were not only financially but also emotionally.

We realized that a major lifestyle change not only needed an attitude adjustment but also a fresh outlook on what really mattered most in life.

Being “Americans” and living in Western culture, we had a tendency to take the more important things for granted such as relationships, family, and even time.

We are constantly bombarded by negativity in media that it sometimes drain positive energies within.

As we looked back and remembered how adversity shaped us to this point, we found that the following lessons we learned helped mold our character and change our life’s perspective, and hope it also changes yours.

WE FORGET

We resolved to forget about past failures and mistakes.

Being together now for more than 30 years, we had our share of monumental blunders, missed opportunities, and even regretful mistakes that often tricked us into thinking we were total failures.

We had to make a conscious decision to leave those behind where they belong, in the past.

We determined to forgive and forget and deliberately move forward one step at a time.

It not only freed us from the guilt that came from regret but also healed some of the anger that resulted from resentment.

WE LIVE

We live in the moment, every moment.

We realize we only have a few hours in a day; 24 to be exact and are not promised the next.

So we committed to not waste the time by being intentional; that is, by making it a point to be together as a family, enjoying each other’s company, not afraid to express our love and gratitude for each other, and most of all acknowledging that life is precious and we owe it to ourselves to make each moment count.

WE FOCUS

We decided to focus, to keep our eyes on the prize; in this case, seeing ourselves being ‘debt free’ and planning our celebration once we get there since it’s only a matter of time.

We believe that by imagining us already there, helps us focus our energy and concentrate our actions so that each step we take is a step in the right direction.

There are too many distractions around that sometimes can overwhelm; but by making a deliberate decision to focus on the task ahead, sets us up to eventually achieve whatever goal we set out in life.

WE ARE CAUTIOUS

We decided to practice caution.

We already know how our past foolish decisions resulted in the mistakes we’re trying to get out of, so this time around, we decided to take slow but steady steps.

We figured this is not a sprint but a marathon made up of deliberate, precise steps.

Being mindful of the lessons of the past, and practicing careful attention to our actions, will help us get to our goal safe and sound.

WE ARE GRATEFUL

We are always grateful.

We realize that there are good and bad in every situation but we now only focus on the good.

We know that whatever our situation is, it’s only temporary.

Life is a journey, and “we may never pass this way again”, so it’s not only the destination that counts but also how we end up when we get there, or in other words, what we learn and apply as we go through life, is just as important as the prize.

We’re thankful for these challenges and the opportunities they provide to flex our character muscles.  Because, if we weren’t in this hole we’re in, we’d still be languishing in our mediocrity and excelling in being regular.

We hope these attitude adjustments help you as you make your journey an awesome one.

Great post. I love that you have incorporated philosophies that apply to any part of life not just finance. I like the openess and honesty of your voice.
    Bravo

    • Thanks Ingrid, we really appreciate the comment.

Yes, we believe that first we heal ourselves or get healed within, then we can address external issues such as financial distress and alike, so that we can then reach out and help others 🙂

      Blessings to you and yours.
